Musnad Middle Ground

Middle Ground's blog, khuṭbahs, classes, and podcasts quote the same ḥadīth across dozens of pieces of content — but with varying wording, citation quality, translation, and narrator spelling. Musnad Middle Ground exists to create one stable, canonical record for each verified report, cross-referenced against every place it's been cited.

Each ḥadīth below has been independently checked against primary sources — sunnah.com and dorar.net's ḥadīth encyclopedia — by Imām Marc Manley. A record includes the canonical Arabic matn, its approved English translation, the narrator, the collector and collection it comes from, and a full list of every Middle Ground blog post, khuṭbah, or class that has cited it. Where the same ḥadīth appears in more than one piece of content, all of those citations are linked here in one place.

Preach to the people once every Friday. If you insist, then twice; and if you must do more, then three times. But do not weary the people with this Qurʾān. And don't let me find you coming to people while they're engaged in a conversation of their own, cutting them off so you can preach to them, interrupting their conversation and making them weary. Rather, remain silent; then, when they ask you to speak, speak to them when they have the appetite to hear it. And beware of rhymed prose in supplication, and avoid it, for I knew the Messenger of God ﷺ and his Companions, and they would do nothing but avoid that.

Ḥanẓalah al-Usayyidī—who was one of the scribes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—said: Abū Bakr met me and asked, "How are you, O Ḥanẓalah?" I said, "Ḥanẓalah has become a hypocrite." He said, "Subḥān Allāh! What are you saying?" I said, "When we are with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he reminds us of the Fire and Paradise until it is as though we see them with our own eyes. But when we leave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we become occupied with our wives, our children, and our worldly affairs, and we forget much." Abū Bakr said, "By Allah, we experience the same thing." So Abū Bakr and I went together until we entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said, "Ḥanẓalah has become a hypocrite, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What is the matter?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, when we are with you, you remind us of the Fire and Paradise until it is as though we see them with our own eyes. But when we leave you, we become occupied with our wives, our children, and our worldly affairs, and we forget much." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you were to remain continually in the state you are in when you are with me and engaged in remembrance, the angels would shake hands with you upon your beds and along your roads. But, O Ḥanẓalah, there is a time for this and a time for that." He repeated this three times.

I came to the Prophet ﷺ with a gold cross around my neck, and he said, "O ʿAdī, throw away this idol." He said, "Indeed, they did not worship them [directly], but when [the rabbis/monks] permitted something forbidden, they took it as permitted, and when they forbade something permitted, they took it as forbidden — that is their worship [of them].

The first person in Baṣrah to speak about al-qadar in this manner was Maʿbad al-Juhanī. So Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥimyarī and I set out for Ḥajj or ʿUmrah. We said, "If only we could meet one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him about what these people are saying concerning divine decree." We were then granted the opportunity to meet ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb as he was entering the mosque. My companion and I approached him from either side, one of us on his right and the other on his left. I assumed that my companion would leave the speaking to me, so I said: "O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, some people have appeared among us who recite the Qurʾān and seek deeply after knowledge," and he mentioned something of their condition, "but they claim that there is no divine decree and that events occur independently, without prior determination." He said: "When you meet those people, tell them that I am free of them and they are free of me. By the One by whom ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar swears, if one of them possessed gold equal to Mount Uḥud and spent it all, Allah would not accept it from him until he believed in divine decree." Then he said: "My father, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, narrated to me: One day, while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man appeared before us whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black. No signs of travel could be seen upon him, yet none of us knew him. He sat down before the Prophet ﷺ, placed his knees against his knees, and placed his hands upon his thighs. Then he said: 'O Muḥammad, tell me about Islam.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Islam is that you testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, give the zakāh, fast Ramaḍān, and perform pilgrimage to the House if you are able to find a way to it.' He said, 'You have spoken the truth.' We were amazed that he would ask him and then confirm that his answer was correct. He then said: 'Tell me about faith.' He replied: 'It is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and that you believe in divine decree, both its good and its evil.' He said, 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: 'Then tell me about excellence, iḥsān.' He replied: 'It is that you worship Allah as though you see Him; and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.' He said: 'Then tell me about the Hour.' He replied: 'The one being asked knows no more about it than the one asking.' He said: 'Then tell me about its signs.' He replied: 'That the slave woman will give birth to her mistress, and that you will see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing with one another in constructing lofty buildings.' Then the man departed. I remained for some time, and then the Prophet ﷺ said to me: 'O ʿUmar, do you know who the questioner was?' I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'That was Jibrīl. He came to you to teach you your religion.'

The reward of the prayer offered by a person in congregation is twenty-five times greater than that of the prayer offered in one's house or in the market (alone). And this is because if he performs ablution and does it perfectly and then proceeds to the mosque with the sole intention of praying, then for every step he takes towards the mosque, he is upgraded one degree in reward and his one sin is taken off (crossed out) from his accounts (of deeds). When he offers his prayer, the angels keep on asking Allah's blessings and Allah's forgiveness for him as long as he is (staying) at his place of prayer. They say, 'O Allah! Bestow Your blessings upon him, be merciful and kind to him.' And one is regarded in prayer as long as one is waiting for the prayer.
