Seeing, Hearing But Turning Away

Sūrat al-Anʿām refutes people’s rejection of the Qur’ān and the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, namely to blame disbelief on insufficient evidence when the deeper problem is a hard heart. The Quraysh mocked the Messenger ﷺ, demanded an ever-shifting cadre of proofs, presenting themselves as though they had earnestly considered the message and found it lacking. But the Qur’ān exposes that posture as dishonest and deceitful. The problem was not that the signs were unclear; it was that the Quraysh (as it is with most people) had already decided what they were willing to accept. This is why the Qur’ān describes them as turning away from the āyāt—not merely walking away, abandoning serious consideration of the evidences presented to them. The warning extends beyond the Quraysh. We too have to ask whether we are genuinely open to correction, or whether we only accept truth when it confirms what we already want to believe.
